Torres del Paine (0) preparation

Torres del Paine was a must do when decided to go to Chile.

We did try to search as much information on the park as we could, to understand the length of trip for us. since this was a first trekking trip for us ever, we did not want to  overdo it. We used the official park website, tripadvisor forum posts, and our expectations and common sense and came up with the following plan:

Conclusion after the trip: We could have gone back home the last day (no need for an extra night there). The rest was well planned and doable.

Before the trip we did some prep work:
- we booked all refugios for a bed. Refugios are more expensive than campsites, but for us turned out to be very good choice as it was windy and really cold
- bought trekking food to take with us (as lunch & dinner). Yet we arranged to have breakfast at the refugios for the sake of diversity
- we did book dinner meals only in the last refugio - Paine Grande. And the dinner was huge!
- we packed 30l backpack per person. The big backpacks were left at the nice Hospedaje Magallanes in Punta Arenas

Packing essentials (this is not a complete list, just the main stuff I would take the next time I'd repeat the trip in November)
  • wind proof and waterproof pants - very useful, as the weather up there is unpredictable
  • wind proof and water proof jacket - very useful, as the weather up there is unpredictable
  • hiking boots. I had these Lafuma. Turned out to be of great value: suited the snowy, and hot weather.
  • hiking socks. I took way too many of warm socks. It would be enough with a pair of warm (for nights), compress/hiking socks - 2 pairs.
  • 2 synthetic T-shirts with short and 2 with long sleeves
  • hat - beanie
  • warm fleece jacket. was useful during the evenings and up at Las Torres
  • thermo pants
  • gloves
  • backpack: 30L was enough for me. With rain cover
  • buff for protecting the face in the wind
  • thermo mug - was of great value as you could get hot eater free of charge, but for bottled cold water i had to pay
  • sleeping bag. I had one with comfort T +6 C. Should have had one for T +1C. Still, not a problem, i asked for an extra sleeping bag (though you might have to pay for that).
  • cell phone - only as an alarm clock, as there is no coverage in most of the park area
  • photo camera+charger.
  • sunscreen!!!
  • earplugs - comes handy when there is a snorer in the room. And there always is!
